Small breeds are the long-lived end of the dog world: a 12.7-year median in the 2024 UK study against 11.9 for large breeds. French Bulldogs are also flat-faced, and brachycephalic breeds had a median of 11.2 years against 12.8 for medium-muzzled dogs, mostly because of airway, heat and spinal problems. Within the breed, the spread is wide: body condition alone moves lifespan by up to 2.5 years.

How to help your French Bulldog live longer

Keep them lean, all their life

Overweight dogs lived 5 months to 2.5 years less than ideal-weight dogs in a study of 50,000 dogs; lean-fed Labradors lived 1.8 years longer than free-fed littermates. Ribs should be easy to feel and a waist visible from above.

Brush teeth and treat dental disease

Periodontal disease is nearly universal by middle age and is linked with heart, kidney and liver changes. In french bulldogs it is the number one health problem: daily brushing and cleanings under anesthesia when your vet advises.

Protect the airway

French Bulldogs are flat-faced. Avoid heat and hard exercise, use a harness, keep weight down (every extra pound worsens breathing) and ask your vet for a BOAS assessment; airway surgery helps many dogs. Flat-faced breeds had a median lifespan of 11.2 years versus 12.8 for medium-muzzled breeds in the 2024 UK study.

Harness, not collar

Toy and small breeds are prone to tracheal collapse and slipping kneecaps. Walk on a harness, keep nails short, and ask your vet to check the patellas at every visit.

Talk about neuter timing

Neutered dogs lived about a year longer than entire dogs in UK life tables (11.98 vs 10.50 years for females; 11.49 vs 10.58 for males). For most small and medium breeds, timing after 6 months is a reasonable default; ask your vet.

Twice-yearly vet visits from age 8.5

French Bulldogs enter the senior stage at about 8.5, the last quarter of their expected lifespan. From then, exams every six months with bloodwork, urine testing and blood pressure catch kidney, thyroid and heart disease while they are treatable.
